Start by using the back pocket pattern piece to cut out two lining pieces--have fun picking out a pretty cotton print.
With right sides together, stitch across the top edge of the pocket using at least a 1/2" seam allowance.
Press the cotton print to the wrong side of the denim. It's hard to see in this photo, but I made sure to crease a fold in the denim (about 1/8" away from the actual seam). That way the printed fabric would stay neatly on the inside.
Now we're going to treat this pocket as if it were made from a single piece of fabric. Use the serger to clean finish the side and bottom edges (You'll also be sewing them together as well.) Then press the top corners down 3/8". This will prevent the serged edge from poking out of the top of the pocket when you press the side edges under.
Then press the side and bottom edges under (toward the printed fabric). Notice that the seam allowance is not going to show when you topstitch this pocket to your jeans.
Before you topstitch the pocket to the back of your jeans fold the top edge down. Find the center of the pocket and sew a bar tack to hold it in place.
Press the fold edge to get a nice shape. Now, topstitch the pocket to the back of your jeans.
This technique looks great on the coin pocket too!
Another reason to line your pockets is to add stability to stretchy denim--topstitching comes out straighter. If you're adding a flap to the pocket, the extra layer of fabric helps to support the tack button.
In this case, simply match the two pieces wrong sides together, serge the edges and treat the pocket as if it were one piece of fabric.

Awesome tute. Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteOh! I've lined waist bands but never pockets, nice idea. This has me thinking I need to sew up some more jeans!

I'm all ready to start a pair of jeans after reading the patternreview transcript of your discussion on jeans the other night.
ReplyDeletealso is that bar-tack on the coin pocket permanent or temporary? Please clarify....
ReplyDeleteHi Lazymilliner--I'm excited that you are going to start stitchin' jeans...keep me posted. The bar-tack on the pocket a permanent (decorative) tack to hold the folded edge down. You can jazz it up by playing with decorative threads (metallic would give it some sparkle!)
ReplyDelete...Also, a big THANK YOU to everyone who takes a second to comment...it's really inspiring to hear your input!
